A better desktop app, and security updates

The desktop app now handles links and downloads properly, remembers its window and updates without interrupting you. The app's core libraries also get important security fixes.

Features

  • The desktop app can open at login, starting quietly in the tray so the capture shortcut is always ready.
  • When a desktop update is ready, the tray menu offers to restart into it, so an update never interrupts your work.

Improvements

  • The desktop app remembers its window size and position, and starts at a size that fits smaller screens.
  • Links to other sites now open in your default browser from the desktop app.
  • Opening the desktop app a second time brings the running one forward instead of adding another tray icon.
  • The desktop app now also checks for updates while it runs, not only when it starts.
  • Updated the app's core libraries to close known security vulnerabilities.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed downloads doing nothing in the desktop app on Mac, including board exports and project CSV exports. Files now go to your Downloads folder.

Boards in Notes, a clearer project page, and a notes graph

Draw flows and quick diagrams together on boards in Notes. Project pages get a new header and a quieter filter bar. See how your notes connect in a graph, and check your priorities on the dashboard.

Features

  • Boards in Notes: a shared canvas for flows and quick diagrams, with stickies, rectangles, ellipses, decision diamonds and text. Make one from the ribbon, the command palette or a folder's menu.
  • Everyone on a board edits it together and sees each other's cursors, selections and items as they move.
  • Connect items with arrows, label them, and choose a curved, straight or right-angled line, dashed or solid, with arrowheads at the end, both ends or none.
  • Drag an arrow to an empty spot to add a new item there, already connected.
  • Text on a board can be a title, subtitle, body text, or a bulleted or numbered list. Type # , ## , - or 1. to switch as you write.
  • Turn any item into a task. The item then shows the task's status and opens it in one click.
  • Export a board as a PNG or SVG from its ⋯ menu.
  • Graph view shows your notes and the links between them. Search it, zoom in, and click a note to open it. Open it from the ribbon or the command palette.
  • The right panel of a note has a local graph of the notes around it.
  • Notes settings set the font, layout and full-width tables for all your notes. A note can still have its own, from its ⋯ menu, and everyone reading it sees it that way.
  • Priorities vs. reality on the dashboard shows each active project's share of the work done or in progress over the last two weeks, next to the share its priority asks for, and flags the projects where the two disagree.

Improvements

  • Items line up with their neighbours as you move them, with a guide to show it, and snap to a grid otherwise.
  • Drag either end of an arrow to attach it to another item or side.
  • [[Links]] on a board open their note, and count as links in backlinks and the graph.
  • Boards follow your light or dark theme, and work for people you share them with to view.
  • The project page has a new header with the project key, its status and priority, and its progress, open and overdue tasks and next milestone at a glance.
  • Filters now stay out of the way until you open them. On a project, the Filters button sits beside the tabs and shows how many are on.
  • Each filter shows what it is set to, and clears on its own with its ×.
  • Due date filters offer Due today and Due this week, and estimates offer quick ranges, besides your own dates and hours.
  • Clearing filters on a project's Tasks tab goes back to hiding done and planned tasks, as it starts.
  • The ribbon switches the sidebar between your files, bookmarks, search and archive. Notes always open on your files.
  • Bookmarked notes show a bookmark in the file tree.
  • Focus mode is now in the note's ⋯ menu.
  • Links between notes and web links in a note open in a new tab.
  • Removed the search tab from the sidebar. Search is still in the file tree and the ribbon.
  • Let's Get Something Done no longer needs time estimates. Tasks without one count as 45 minutes, or a length you choose, and the session follows the same order as Do next, in-progress tasks included.
  • Skip any task in a work session or add one of your own, and type a custom length the way you would say it, like 90m or 1h30.
  • Let's Get Something Done remembers the length you picked last and tells you before a new session replaces one that is already running.
  • Click In progress, Due this week or Blocked on the dashboard to open those tasks.
  • Removed the Needs attention and Where your energy goes cards. What they showed is now in the metric cards and Priorities vs. reality.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed the Planning page breaking when a due date or minimum estimate filter was used.
1.42.0October 28, 2026

Notes: share with your team, write together, link tasks

Share a note or a folder with people from your workspaces and write in it together live, colour folders, and link tasks by typing their key.

Features

  • Share a note or a whole folder with people from your workspaces, or with a whole workspace, to view or to edit. Notes and folders shared with you are under Shared with me.
  • Write in a note together: you see who else is in it, where they are typing, and every change as it happens.
  • Give a folder a colour from its menu. Its icon, its contents and the tabs of its notes take the colour, and sub-folders follow it unless they have their own.
  • Type a task's key anywhere in a note, like SIE-2, and it shows with the task's current status.
  • Link a task by typing @, a project key and a dash (WEB- or WEB-logo), or /link task, then search by number or name.

Improvements

  • Notes are your own: where a note sits never decides who sees it, only sharing does. A top-level folder can be filed under a project so its notes show on the project's Notes tab, without sharing them.
  • Note tabs are easier to tell apart, with the open note clearly raised.
  • A banner shows when you are offline, and network problems are explained in plain words instead of error codes.
  • Removed the New folder row at the foot of the file tree. The button at the top still makes one.
1.41.0October 18, 2026

Notes: paste anything, import Markdown, and choose your layout

Paste Markdown or rich text into a note and it keeps its formatting, import .md files as notes, and pick a narrow or wide layout with full-width tables.

Features

  • Paste Markdown into a note and it turns into headings, lists, checklists, tables and code instead of plain symbols.
  • Paste from a web page, Google Docs, Word or Notion and the formatting comes along, without stray spacing or office markup.
  • Import Markdown files as notes from the file explorer, the command palette or a folder's menu, or drop them on a folder. Each file's title and text are kept.
  • Insert a Markdown file into the note you are writing: type /, choose Import Markdown file, or drop the file into the note.
  • Choose a narrow or wide layout for your notes from the ⋯ menu.
  • Stretch tables to the edges of the page with Full-width tables, in the ⋯ menu of any note with a table.

Improvements

  • Copying from a note now gives Markdown, so it pastes formatted in other apps and as clean Markdown in code editors.
  • The note's ⋯ menu is easier to scan, with bookmark, font, layout and tables apart from archive and delete.
  • Your font, layout and table choices apply to every note.
1.40.0October 16, 2026

Notes: tables, images, code, formulas and more

Notes now hold everything Markdown can: tables, images, coloured code and diagrams, highlights, formulas and footnotes. Images have a storage limit per plan, and a guide note shows it all.

Features

  • Tables in notes: type /table, then add or remove rows and columns from the toolbar above the table. Tab moves between cells.
  • Images in notes: paste or drop an image, or type /image to pick one. Images are stored with your account and shown in place.
  • Code blocks are coloured by language, with a language picker at the top right. A Mermaid block draws its diagram under the code.
  • Highlight text with ==two equals signs== or ⌘⇧H, and use underline, subscript and superscript.
  • Formulas: $x^2$ inline or a $$ block, drawn with KaTeX. Click a formula to edit it.
  • Footnotes: type /footnote to add a numbered reference with its note at the end of the page.
  • New accounts get a note called How to use notes, in the Welcome to Ember project, with an example of every block.

Improvements

  • Image storage in notes is limited per plan: free accounts can add images up to 1 MB each and 10 MB in all; paid accounts 5 MB and 2 GB. Every image is compressed on upload, larger ones are shrunk to fit, and images no note shows any more are removed when the total is reached. Your usage is on the Account page.
  • The Help page has a section on notes.
  • The Account page is now its own space, with a view for each thing: profile, team, plan (what each plan includes and the one you are on), storage and API keys.
1.39.0October 14, 2026

Notes: write, organize, and share with your team

A new place to write: notes with folders, links between notes, and tasks made from your text. Share a note with a project's team, or keep it private.

Features

  • Notes: a writing space of its own, with your notes in a file tree, tabs for the notes you have open, and a focus mode that hides everything but the page.
  • A Notion-style editor: type / to add headings, checklists, quotes, code and more, select text to format it, and drag blocks to reorder them.
  • Make your own folders and sub-folders. Link a folder to a project and every note inside belongs to that project.
  • Link a note to a project. Linked notes are public by default, so everyone in the project's workspace can read and edit them. Switch a note to private to keep it to yourself.
  • Notes your teammates share show up under Shared with me, and on the project's Notes tab.
  • Link notes to each other by typing [[ and a title. Each note shows its backlinks, its outgoing links and an outline of its headings.
  • Select any text in a note and create a task from it. A list line keeps the task's key and its live status, and ticking it completes the task.
  • Search every note, jump to any note with ⌘O, and run commands with ⌘P.
  • On the desktop app, capture a quick note from anywhere with a global shortcut.
  • AI agents can create, read, search and append to your notes, and turn them into tasks.

Improvements

  • Workspace settings have a Notes tab listing the notes of the workspace's projects.
  • Every project picker can be searched by name, key or workspace.
1.38.0October 1, 2026

Project activity, one dashboard, and a clearer What's New

See who changed what in a project, find everything you need for the day on the dashboard, and catch up on releases more easily.

Features

  • Every project has an Activity tab that shows who changed what and when, including changes made by AI agents.

Improvements

  • The dashboard and the Focus page are now one page: your open work at a glance, what to do next, what needs attention, and where your energy goes.
  • Do Next ranks your tasks by due date and priority, and a colored label says why each one is there, such as Overdue or Due today.
  • What's New moved from the dashboard to the user menu.
  • What's New is easier to read: changes are grouped into New, Improved, and Fixed, you can search and filter them, and releases since your last visit are marked.
  • The whole sidebar scrolls as one, and archived projects stay out of it.
  • Done projects no longer look dimmed in the sidebar.
  • Removed the project filter box from the sidebar.
  • Pages load faster and Ember makes fewer requests in the background.
1.37.0September 30, 2026

Move tasks between projects, diagrams, and archived projects

Move a task to another project, add diagrams and checklists to tasks, and archive projects you are done with.

Features

  • Move a task to another project. Old links to it keep working.
  • Add diagrams to a task's description with the new Diagram button.
  • Tick off checklist items right from a task's description.
  • Archive projects you are done with to keep your lists tidy.
  • Create a new project without leaving Create Task.

Improvements

  • The Welcome to Ember project covers everything that is new.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed an error when editing a task type.
  • Fixed task links on the dashboard.
1.36.0September 27, 2026

Custom statuses and types, a project overview, and an archive for done tasks

Add statuses and types that match how your workspace works, see a project's progress at a glance, and let done tasks leave your boards on their own. AI agents can work with all of it.

Features

  • Add custom task statuses and types to a workspace, such as In Review or Research. Every custom status belongs to a built-in category, so boards, filters, and reports treat its tasks like the rest of that category.
  • Rename the built-in statuses and types and give them a different color and icon, for example To Do as Backlog. Only the look changes, and Reset brings the default back.
  • Every project opens on a new Overview tab with its progress, open and overdue tasks, remaining estimate, and a breakdown of tasks by status, priority, type, and milestone.
  • Done tasks are archived 14 days after you complete them, so boards and lists stay short. Archived tasks are never deleted: they stay in search, still count towards progress, and come back if you reopen them.
  • See a project's archived tasks from the link on its board, or turn on Archived in the filters on the Tasks page.
  • Workspace owners can change the archive period, or turn archiving off, under Done Tasks in the workspace settings.
  • AI agents connected with your API key now see each task under the status and type names your workspace uses, and can move tasks to a custom status or type.
  • AI agents can set a task's type, and filter tasks by type or by custom status.
  • AI agents can add, rename, and delete statuses and types in workspaces you own, and change how long done tasks stay before they are archived.

Improvements

  • Workspace settings are organized into General, Members, and Danger Zone tabs.
  • The sidebar links straight to Workspace Settings for workspaces you own.
  • Help, feedback, and the app download moved from the sidebar to the user menu.
  • Editing a project uses the same pickers and Markdown editor as creating one.
  • Project exports list statuses and types by the names your workspace uses, custom ones included.
  • Disabled buttons and fields look the same everywhere in the app.
  • Tabs scroll sideways on small screens instead of being cut off.
  • AI agents leave archived tasks out of task lists unless you ask for them, and can tell which tasks are archived.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed Search sometimes undoing a filter change in team workspaces.
  • Fixed New Task creating a task that showed in no board column when the list's status filter was cleared or set to several statuses.
1.35.0September 23, 2026

Close milestones, tidier planning, and a new home at my.theember.app

Mark milestones as done from Planning or the milestone page, choose how many tasks Ready to Start shows, and create projects with the same pickers and editor as tasks.

Features

  • Mark a milestone as done, or reopen it, from the milestone page or straight from the Planning timeline.
  • Choose how many tasks Ready to Start shows on your dashboard: 10, 20, or 50.
  • AI agents connected with your API key can now create milestones, update or complete them, and attach tasks to a milestone.

Improvements

  • Done milestones now leave the Planning timeline, so it only shows work still in progress. Use Show completed to bring them back.
  • New projects use the same status and priority pickers as tasks, with icons.
  • Project details are written in the same Markdown editor as task descriptions, with a formatting toolbar and preview.
  • Ember now lives at my.theember.app. Existing links and bookmarks redirect automatically.
  • Seat purchasing and billing are hidden while we move to a new payment provider. Your team keeps working as before.

Bug fixes

  • Fixed a blank dashboard in workspaces with no projects. It now shows the usual layout, and pending workspace invites appear again.
1.34.0June 17, 2026

Recurring tasks and a Markdown description editor

Set tasks to repeat on a schedule, and write task descriptions in a Markdown editor with a live preview.

Features

  • Set a task to repeat daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly — choose specific weekdays, a day of the month, and an optional end date.
  • When you complete a recurring task, the next one is created for you, so a routine never slips off your list.
  • A small repeat marker sits beside recurring tasks everywhere you see them — lists, the board, planning, and search.
  • Filter any task list to show everything, only recurring tasks, or hide recurring tasks.
  • Write task descriptions in a Markdown editor with a formatting toolbar, and switch to Preview to see exactly how they'll read.
1.33.0May 31, 2026

Mobile-optimized task and project tables

  • Project and milestone tables follow the same pattern on mobile for a consistent experience.
  • Desktop table layouts are unchanged.

Features

  • New Scratchpad panel — open it from the sidebar to jot down notes, ideas, or reminders without leaving your current view.
  • Scratchpad items support multiple lines — press Shift+Enter to add a new line within an item, Enter to start a new bullet.
  • Convert any scratchpad line into a task with one click — choose a project and fill in the task form without losing your note.

  • Status, type, priority, milestone, due date, and time estimate are all editable inline from the sidebar.
  • Task detail page has a new layout with breadcrumb navigation showing project, milestone, and task key.
